February 9 is National Pizza Day (NPD), a faux holiday that’s easily celebrated locally at one of the many area eateries with superb pies. If you haven’t tried them yet, newcomer Ava’s Kitchen and Bar in Kenilworth is a fine spot to partake in NPD festivities. And while the establishment in the former Umberto’s restaurant is new, the man at the helm is not, it’s Attilio Guarino, the pizza chef that made a name for himself at Emma’s Brick Oven in Cranford.
Aside from killer pies, when you step into Ava’s you’ll quickly realize that Guarino is obsessed with old world style. That ambiance can be found all around the restaurant and it’s meant to bring you back to another era; an industrial Saloon of sorts, according to their website.
Ava’s has a full bar, featuring a slew of craft beers, ciders and wine.
